CLIENT: Yeshivah of Flatbush

Newsletter

The Yeshivah of Flatbush, an Orthodox high school located in Brooklyn, NY, needed a clear and cohesive means of distributing information to current and prospective students and their families. Red Rooster Group redesigned the format of the Yeshivah’s newsletter to serve as an informative and accessible presentation of the Yeshivah’s divisions and services.

As the school transitioned from producing very long print newsletters to communicating timely information through an e-mail newsletter and blog, the newsletter served more as a brochure with information about the school’s overall offerings.

The previous long print newsletters featured large amounts of important information, but were not grouped in a way that made it easy to understand the school’s strengths. We consolidated information in a concise way to quickly communicate what the school was all about. After determining the most important things that the school wanted to communicate, we organized the information into spreads dedicated to each of their main offerings. We redesigned the pages with prominent headlines to distinguish categories and catch the attention of readers. Each spread had a main story, subsidiary stories and smaller news bites to help the reader determine the importance of the information.

We arranged the fall and spring issues to present information about the school in a more organized fashion so that, just by flipping through, the families of prospective and current students could easily identify focus areas of the newsletter.

Fall Issue

The fall issue was designed to focus on recruitment of students entering eighth grade to attend the Yeshiva’s high school. The issue emphasized the high school’s strong career orientation by highlighting the impressive list of students’ college acceptances. Our design presented information about the upper division in a compelling and easy to read manner. We grouped topics of interest into four main areas: College Prep, Academics, Science and Technology, and Student choice. Providing a hierarchy helped readers to absorb information and showcased the various dimensions of the Yeshivah’s offerings.

Spring Issue

The goal in the design of the spring issue was to highlight the school’s robust offerings, in particular, those related to the elementary school. The issue featured spreads about the early childhood program and extracurricular activities. Additionally, the issue contained a spread describing the Capital Campaign and recognizing the school’s donors with featured profiles.

Our redesign of both issues helped to elevate the Yeshivah to a more professional level.

CLIENT: Sephardic Bikur Holim

Like many social service organizations, Sephardic Bikur Holim wanted to engage a younger audience, encourage volunteerism, and help people connect events and services to their organization. To accomplish this, we launched a magazine that was two-in-one. One half of the publication featured a youth event, and the other half featured articles and charts about volunteering. We proposed the engaging format of a double-sided magazine with two different covers, so that whether someone picked up the magazine from the front or the back, they would see a cover and get the message.

Engaging a Younger Audience

Draws for younger people included a lead article written by one of their peer participants describing her experience in the half-marathon. Another spread called “Voices from the Marathon” highlighted various participants with large, colorful photos and quotes to share why people participated in the organization’s event. A third spread listed each participant’s finish time complete with a colorful key that highlighted such people as the “Top 10 Women” “Youngest Runner” and “Fastest Man.”

Promoting Volunteerism

The other half of the magazine, complete with an entirely different cover, was guided by the theme of “volunteerism.” These articles emphasized the many ways that people have been involved in volunteering for SBH. We also designed a flowchart showing young people how their interests could be channeled into volunteer work: “What do you think is a better gift, flowers or chocolate?”

Flowers > Volunteer for Flowers for Widows.

Chocolate > Volunteer for SBH’s Food Pantry.

The only good gift is a power tool. > Volunteer for Home Improvement.

Visually Unifying SBH Events & Programs

The design of the magazine also addressed another one of the agency’s problems: that many people participated in their programs and events without being aware that they were supporting SBH. This was partly a result of each program being promoted independently with their own ads and marketing materials. To remedy this and showcase SBH’s involvement, we created “house ads” showcasing each service and event in a consistent way. Now, instead of an array of ads with completely different designs, the ads reinforce SBH’s brand. All the ads feature the line, “Another great way to support the work of SBH,” as a way of connecting the programs and events directly to the agency so that people know who they are supporting.

Results

SBH had the opportunity to reach a large audience by having the new magazine shrink-wrapped and distributed with a widely circulated and well-known publication within their community. However, that gave us an extremely rush deadline of only 3 days to design the entire publication. The Red Rooster Group team pulled together to develop a unique format for the publication, map out the content, design all the spreads, retouch all the images, and go through rounds of proofing and revisions — all within the given time. The effort was well worth it, as the magazine has landed in people’s homes in time for the summer, and has been receiving a very enthusiastic response.

“Red Rooster Group turned our marketing dreams into reality! We wanted to create a magazine that represented our vast and varied charity organization, and our goals quickly became one and the same. In true “marathon” fashion, the finished product exceeded all expectations – no one can stop talking about it! We look forward to working with Red Rooster for many more issues and years to come. Thank you!”

CLIENT: The Jewish Education Project

Red Rooster Group was retained by The Jewish Education Project to introduce the agency’s new name and roll out its brand. Formed by the merging of the Board of Jewish Education of New York (BJENY) and Suffolk Adult Jewish Education Service (SAJES), The Jewish Education Project fosters innovation and new approaches to Jewish education. Red Rooster Group is handling the agency’s marketing needs.

Project InCiTE Reports

To inspire innovative ideas in teaching young Jews about Israel, The Jewish Education Project established a fellowship program. After twenty fellows were awarded grants to implement their educational initiatives, the organization wanted to share the results with their donors and the public to showcase the organization’s role in inspiring the next generation of innovative Jewish educators.

Two reports emerged from this process — one about the fellowships, and one about the overall process and leanings about Israel Education. We designed the books in a wire-bound format to be easy to read and to showcase The Jewish Education Project’s brand. In addition to the reports being showcased on the website, and being very well-received, they provided the springboard for the organization’s fundraising event showcasing innovators in Jewish Education.

Donor Brochure

To excite donors about supporting The Jewish Education Project, we created this brochure around the concept of “Redefining Jewish Education,” showcasing give ways in which the organization was pushing the envelope and inspiring others to re-think their idea of what education can be. The brochure is cut at an angle and features short-folds to entice people to open it.

Benchmarking Report

What inspires innovation in congregations? This benchmarking reports explores the results of a survey of over 100 congregations to help other congregations understand their own propensity for innovation. We designed this nonprofit publication as an extension of the agency’s new brand image.

Gala Event Invitation

Since The Jewish Education Project promotes innovation, the invitation to their annual gala had to be unique. With the theme of “Celebrate Pioneers,” we developed a pull out card format that revealed five key points about the organization. The last circle revealed a QR code for the event website. The invitation provided a great way to create an interactive experience with paper.

Banners

We created these pop up banners to provide instant brand recognition for the organization’s events held in other venues, such as their Summer Institute held at the UJA-Federation of New York.

Express Innovation

Express Innovation is a core program for The Jewish Education Project. We developed the brand for this program to unify the program to the parent organization and designed a workbook describing innovative learning models for congregations.

LOMED Handbook

LOMED is another key program for the agency that required a brand update. The new LOMED logo gracefully integrates the English and Hebrew and ties the logo to The Jewish Education Project. We created this workbook as an easy to use guide for schools and congregations to re-invision the way they provide educational services.

Jewish Futures Conference Brochure

Our challenge was to create a brochure that features 8 pages of information on one sheet of paper in a cost effective manner. Given the limited budget, we needed a creative solution that would still highlight the innovative nature of the conference. We developed a brochure that accordion-folds back and forth revealing all the contents of the brochure from the front panel. This format proved to be a very successful for the conference in which people would constantly be referring to the brochure for information, and allowed the brochure to be produced within cost while providing a high-tech image for the organization, as well as tie into their brand.

The project was a bit complicated — we were creating a new program and brand within an existing program and brand — and Howard and his staff immediately understood the challenge and presented creative and practical solutions. Their designs reflected the message and vision of the new program and were highly attractive — all of my colleagues were very impressed with the new material. Red Rooster Group’s production time was equally as impressive. They turned raw material into finished polished pieces at a very quick pace which made life so much easier for us. Working with Red Rooster Group felt like they were on our team. They went above and beyond what was asked of him. They even reached out to us the day of our big orientation to check if there was anything else they could do to essentially help us succeed. I would work with Red Rooster Group again in a heartbeat.”

They take our vision of what we want our materials to look like and produce something even better than pictured. They are consistent with keeping the style of our marketing products cohesive so our camp materials can be recognized easily. The staff are extremely helpful, friendly, and do a wonderful job. Howard has helped us a great deal organizing our goals and plans for the Alumni Association as well. I love all the help and work Moheeta has done with our insane amount of Facebook groups organizing them and switching them over to pages. It’s such a huge help.”

With this magazine, we launched the alumni association for the oldest camp in the United States. Red Rooster Group handled the complete writing, design and production of the publication. The magazine describes the association and membership levels and features articles profiling alumni.

In terms of design, we used this publication to relate to Incarnation’s brand as a fun, creative place, and to tie into the overall look that we established for their camper recruitment brochures. We developed the name and overall look for the publication, found interesting photos of alumni in the past, as well as newer alumni photos. The design has a hip look that connects the camping experience of yesteryear with the contemporary interests in camp.

RESULT
The magazine, which contains a reply envelope with a membership form, was distributed to 1,700 alumni, and immediately upon launching, resulted in several life members and more than $9,000 in membership dues.

CLIENT: Seedco

With black males in this country facing a 1 in 4 chance of going to prison during their lifetimes, how do you get urban teens to think about career choices? National nonprofit organization, Seedco created a workbook, funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, to address this issue and tasked Red Rooster Group with making it appealing to the target market.

Workbook

We employed three aspects of design to make this project a success: The first was in organizing the information in a way that would be useful, allowing readers to enter the workbook on any page. All activities are designed to be stand-alone and each page features a strip down the side indicating the activity name and chapter.

Secondly, the overall design uses the vernacular typefaces and images that inner city teens can identify with. Each page in the 160 page workbook is different to keep kids engaged.

And finally, to help as an educational tool, on the bottom of every page, each activity has a series icons indicating the types of skills that the activity builds. This is useful for both the teens, and teachers who are looking for activities to strengthen students’ weaknesses.

CLIENT: Grafton

With 700 employees, Grafton, a nonprofit organization that serves people with autism and other developmental disorders, realized that is had a great opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with its employees and help get its story out.

When Grafton engaged Red Rooster Group to upgrade its overall brand image and improve its communications, giving their internal newsletter an upgrade was a part of the process.

The newsletter, addressed to Grafton’s 300 employees, describes the news at the organization’s three locations. Each of the locations were allocated a spread in the publication, establishing a format for each venue to collect news to share with all the employees. The newsletter helps all employees to feel connected to the organization, fosters a better understanding of Grafton’s services, and boost morale.

Brand Architecture

Our research uncovered that one of Grafton’s strengths, the specialized expertise and dedication of its staff, was not being conveyed. We shortened the official name of Grafton School to Grafton and established a brand hierarchy to unify the organization’s four locations under one brand name.

Brand Manual

We created a brand manual to explain the brand – what the organization stands for — and specifies colors, typefaces, graphics and guidelines for the brand. This has allowed the client manage their own brand effectively.

Website

After a strategic assessment of competitors and the users, we redesigned the website around the needs of the users. The redesign has been receiving rave reviews. grafton.org

Display

A flexible system of interchangeable panels helps make their display adaptable for fairs, attracting potential students and employees.

CLIENT: Westbridge Academy

We launched this newsletter to help this special needs school communicate its unique approach to helping students with learning and behavioral issues. We developed the ideas, wrote the articles, designed the pages, created the artwork and handled the printing. The newsletter was a part of a brand update for the school.

After a name change, complete branding process, and smooth transition, the Child Development Center is now Westbridge Academy. The branding process included creation of new logo, brochure, website, and newsletter. It is now able to highlight its strengths, attract new students, and convey the professional nature of the school.

Logo

The new logo is professional as well as a little playful while emphasizing learning. The open book in the form of a bridge reinforces the name.

Brochure

The school’s brochure explains their unique approach to helping kids. The audience for the brochure are the special needs departments at schools aimed towards getting referrals.

Website

The website portrays a fresh new look and helps keep parents and educators at the school districts informed about school activities and news related to special needs education. An easy to use website promoting the right qualities of the school features a calendar of events, photo gallery, and a blog.
