This social service agency was looking for an update on their brand. After an assessment of all their marketing materials and a review of similar organizations in the surrounding counties, we created new language to describe agency, a new logo, a brand presentation, and a new website.

Website

The website focuses on creating awaiting awareness of the services, soliciting donations, and appealing to volunteers. The homepage was designed around those three goals with a rotator image dedicated to each area, and pull down menu to provide easy access to the various services for youth, adults, and seniors. The site also features a calendar of events and a robust donation section providing access to many ways to give.

Donate Page

We created a very robust custom designed donation section that included a number of unique features not found on most nonprofit donation pages including the ability to give one-time and recurring donations with pre-determined levels as well as a write-in choice.

Additional pages in the donation section allow visitors to donate their car, buy tribute cards, support endowment funds, or give in other ways.

To help the Jewish Family Service of Metrowest present a professional face and tell their  story in a compelling way, we redesigned their logo and developed a brand presentation. The presentation describes what makes JFS unique and how they help clients. The presentation culminates with the line “At every age, at every stage, we are here to help.”

Organization

Veterans are returning home in droves from Iraq and Afghanistan, some with severe disabilities. To help them regain hope, the nonprofit organization The Heroes Project, is committed to bringing veterans to the 7 highest summits in the world. A documentary of the climbs will be distributed to veterans hospitals to show veterans who have missing limbs that there is hope.

Website Design

We designed a new interface for this website to dramatically showcase the organization’s message and raise funds for the climbs. The design takes into account best practices for nonprofit website design by making a strong case for supporting the climbs. The homepage focuses on the sense of accomplishment and hope that the extreme climbs bring, while icons of the 7 summits lay out the plan for the next several years. The homepage design also solicits support for a specific wounded warrior and features a moving video for emotional appeal.

The site is currently being updated with the new design.

As part of an extensive brand and fundraising development effort, we created a fresh website for Pratham, an organization driven to educate the youth of India.The website is oriented around engaging potential donors to learn more about Pratham’s mission, find their local chapter and attend events.

Employing educational elements as part of the design, we used a chalkboard background to symbolize teaching and learning and feature rollover maps for the chapters, programs in India, and Pratham’s influence around the world.

The site clearly shows what the problem is, what they do, how it has helped and different ways for individuals to get involved. The news and events are clearly listed and categorized under different chapters. We incorporated emotional impact by using photos, videos, and stories of the children, teachers, volunteers, and donors.

PROGRAM SECTION: The main page for the Programs section provides a short description of each program with links to full page descriptions. The sidebar mimics this navigation with thumbnail images for each program.

CHAPTERS SECTION: The main page for the Chapters section features a map with rollovers that reveal chapter information, and a grid of the 15 chapters with information about each and links to each respective chapter section. Each chapter page features their news and events, as well as chapter specific information including the board list.

NEWS SECTION: The main News section aggregates the national and chapter specific news. Clicking on a chapter in the sidebar displays news for that chapter.

DONATE SECTION: The Donate section builds the case for giving, featuring different ways to get involved in the organization, visitor reports from the field, and testimonials from supporters. The different sidebar elements throughout the site, including video, stats and text box, are evident on this page.

This website for a special needs school helps promote the school for recruitment and fundraising purposes. The website development was part of name change and overall brand strategy which resulted in a new logo, look and messages. Created in WordPress, the site can be updated by school staff on their own without knowledge of programming. The site features a calendar of events, photo gallery and blog.

After a name change, complete branding process, and smooth transition, the Child Development Center is now Westbridge Academy. The branding process included creation of new logo, brochure, website, and newsletter. It is now able to highlight its strengths, attract new students, and convey the professional nature of the school.

The new logo is professional as well as a little playful while emphasizing learning. The open book in the form of a bridge reinforces the name.

Brochure

The school’s brochure explains their unique approach to helping kids. The audience for the brochure are the special needs departments at schools aimed towards getting referrals.

Newsletter

The newsletter conveys the hands-on approach of the school and features student activities, community involvement, and an integrated approach to learning.

Incarnation Camp is the oldest co-ed camp in the United States, and has provided a outdoor adventure experience for kids. When it came time to update their website, their goals were to:

1. Convey the playful nature of their outdoor camp experience.
2. Show a lot of photos and keep the site exciting and engaging.
3. Transition the camp name away from Incarnation Camp, which has religious overtones, to more traditional camp names they had been using for their age divisions.
4. Make the site easy to update.

The new site accomplishes these goals with a WordPress site that features the new brand family, many photos and a content management system that makes the site easy to update.

Interior Pages

All the pages of the website feature vibrant images showing kids in action and the expansive campgrounds, as well as features such as maps showing the distances from major cities, and other content that help parents choose the camp.

A series of 6 images provides a quick walk-through of the different divisions and activities of the camp.

Challenge

This nonoprofit, which helps families who have a child with cancer. needed to increase its visibility and donations. We completely redesigned their brand identity and website to be a strategic tool that would serve the organization well for a long time.

The old site, which Friends of Karen had been using for a long time, contained information about their history and services, had some information about their events and contained a video. It had a homespun feel with images of the children they have helped that conveyed a sense of love and caring. Yet, the site lacked the sophistication that would reflect the organization’s maturity and professionalism. The website needed to stand out and captivate donors and families as well as healthcare profession

Solution

In this example of a successful nonprofit website redesign, we addressed the following elements.

Branding: The site features the new logo in a predominant position to identify the organization. The tagline was enlarged from the normal logo and tagline configuration to make it immediately clear what the organization does.

Message: To tell Friends of Karen’s story, the homepage features a sequence  of 4 rotating images with client testimonials. This is positioned “above the fold” so that it is the first thing seen and can establish the tone for the site. The main message under the photo is written from the client’s point of view, recognizing the hardship and emotions the families feel, the effects of the problem (explaining why Friends of Karen exists) and sets up Friends of Karen as the solution.

Navigation: Navigation is split between the items for a donor, with 3 tabs on the top — About Us, Ways to Give, and Get Involved, while the main services for families are down the left side. The right hand panel contains the “actions” that people can take.

Action Box: An Action Box, which appears on every page, includes the Join Our Email List sign up, Search the site feature, Donate button, links to social media, and an Email a Friend feature.

Images: We used different images for each page on the site – about 80 in all. Rather than use stock images, we used photos of the actual kids and families that Friends of Karen has helped.

Colors: Color is used to establish brand recognition and to aid in navigation. Specific colors indicate the various sections on the site – orange indicates action items, purple is used for information about Friends of Karen and its services, and violet is used for donations and ways to give. Underneath the Action Box in the right hand column are the Event, Photo Gallery and News features. These elements that change are grouped together and colored orange to signal that they change.

Content Management System: Like most nonprofit organizations of their size, Friends of Karen does not have staff who know web programming, so it was essential that the site be easy to update by anyone. To meet this need, the site was created in Drupal, with a full content management system that allows Friends of Karen to add and delete pages and to edit text and photos.

Online Donations: Acceptiva is used to handle online donations and registration for events.

Other Features: The site is programmed so that when Friends of Karen adds a News item or Event, a separate page with that item is created, and it is also automatically added to the list of News or Events, and the latest entries are  automatically posted to the homepage. We added a module that imports photos onto the site from Friends of Karens’ Flickr albums. The site also features Friends of Karen videos hosted on YouTube, newsletters and news coverage. There are also links to their Facebook page.

Overall, the site presents a dramatic new look for the organization that has helped it to exceed its year end fundraising goal.

CLIENT: Grafton

This site for a behavioral healthcare organization serving people with autism and other cognitive and mental disorders was part of a complete brand overhaul that we did for the organization.

We upgraded Grafton’s brand to make it more relevant, designed their website, and created their newsletter and a modular display system to attract clients and employees.

We designed the site to appeal to both potential clients as well as referral sources. It features a virtual tour, full information and photos on each location, an admissions section with PDFs of all necessary forms, an art gallery and other resources. The site has almost 100 photos, which we retouched to coordinate with the colors in each section. The nonprofit website is built with a content management system (CMS) to allow the client to update content. The site has proved very successful with their 300 employees as well as their clients.

We developed a logo that presents the traditional Jewish symbol of a candelabra as a congregation of different types of people. The welcoming colors represent the organization’s upbeat personality. The logo was used as a backdrop during the religious services, acclimating participants to the new organization.
